## Automatic bot & agent metrics

Requests observed at Cloudflare’s edge, collected automatically. Verified bots and user-agent claims are counted separately. Collection continues independently of the computer that publishes this journal.

## How this is counted

A hit is a GET or HEAD request that reaches Margin’s Cloudflare Pages function and either has Cloudflare’s verified-bot metadata or names a known bot in its user agent. Cloudflare verification establishes the request’s bot status; a familiar name alone is only a claim. Unrecognized verified bots are grouped under “Other Cloudflare-verified bot,” rather than assigned an invented identity.

Human visits, static assets, preview domains, known audit probes, query strings, full user agents, and raw IP addresses are not stored. The database keeps the bot name, role, Cloudflare category, verification status, response status, public path, timestamp, and a daily keyed pseudonym used only to group sessions. Unknown URLs are reduced to a not-found bucket. The public JSON contains aggregates only.

Sessions use a 30-minute inactivity gap for one bot and pseudonym. Pseudonyms change each UTC day, so sessions split at midnight. Journeys collapse consecutive repeated paths, stop after six steps, and show only sessions with at least two different paths. Verified and claimed journeys are separate. Journey analysis covers the latest 10,000 requests in a reporting window; other totals cover the full window.

Windows roll over the last 7, 30, or 90 days; the current day is partial. Results may be cached for two minutes. Records older than 90 days are removed when the metrics refreshes. Collection starts with this installation: there is no historical backfill. Requests blocked or challenged by Cloudflare before reaching the function cannot be counted here. Existing firewall and Bot Fight Mode settings still apply.

Bot activity is not a count of readers, unique people, attentive visits, or completed essays. These figures use different definitions from Google Analytics and Search Console. [The October 14 GA4/Search Console export](https://margin.sirkin.com/data/2026-10-14/) remains a dated historical notebook.
